Landmark Day At 2019 Club Awards

The 2019 SSE Airtricity League awards took place in the Knightsbrook Hotel in Trim Co. Meath yesterday, with the Bit O’ Red represented at the ceremony by club employee Shane Crossan.

There were eight awards in total, with Sligo Rovers making an application for four categories. Applications for the awards were sent to the FAI by Shane Crossan in September.

It proved to be a worthwhile trip to the east for the Bit O’ Red, with the club receiving three awards in total which included “Best Family Initiative 2019” “Best Supporters Contribution 2019” and runners up in “Best Matchday Experience 2019”.

In regards to “Best family Initiative 2019” the FAI commented on the Breakfast Club associated with our kids camps, the memorabilia around the ground, activities with our younger supporters such as our Super Red open day and our birthday parties which take place at the club every week.

For “Supporters Contribution Award 2019” the FAI referenced the new seating which was installed this year in the main stand, the phenomenal money raised in the Annual Draw this year and our strong average home attendance of 2,000 supporters per game.

In the category for “Best Matchday experience” the Bit O’ Red received the runners up award with the FAI complimenting the club on its entertainment at home games such as local clubs playing at half time, acknowledging our sponsors on the pitch at half time, allowing supporters access to players on match nights and providing a safe and fun environment for supporters to enjoy.

Shane Crossan spoke at the ceremony on behalf of the club and thanked the FAI and SSE Airtricity for holding the event and thanked them for acknowledging the hard work Sligo Rovers do off the pitch.

He added ” To collected these awards on behalf of Sligo Rovers Football Club is something I am very proud of”.

“These awards are in recognition for all the hard work we do as a football club off the pitch”.

“The three awards today are for everyone associated with the club. From club employees, to committee members, volunteers, sponsors and supporters these are for you”.

The SSE Airtricity Club Awards have been running since 2017. In their maiden year, the club received runners up in “Supporters Contribution Award” while in 2018 we also received runners up in “Best Matchday Experience”.

Sligo Rovers Match Poster Competition

The #bitored have worked with six primary schools in the region over the last two weeks, in conjunction with a poster competition developed by the club.

We asked children to design our match poster for our home league game with Shamrock Rovers next month, in schools such as Ransboro, Scoil Ursula, Rathcormac, St. Johns, The Mercy Primary and Carraroe.

The competition was aimed at children in third, fourth, fifth and sixth class respectively.

The club received over 300 entries to the competition, with the club picking a winner in each classroom and presenting them with a small prize from the club.

The club then picked an outright winner from each respective school, with these final six drawings now going to public vote to decide which design will be used as our match poster next month.

To show our appreciation to every child who entered the competition, the club have committed to displaying every entry to the competition in the ground on the night of the game against Shamrock Rovers on October 5th.

The outright winner of the competition will be invited to the game with their family as VIPs, receive a signed match poster and match day programme from the club, be introduced to the crowd at half time and will also get their picture taken on the night for local media.

Below are the finalists for the competition, the child’s name, age and school listed also. Voting will be open for 24 hours and the winner will be contacted on Thursday.

Option 1 – Shauna O’ Connor, 4th class St.Johns N.S.
Option 2 – Charline Siriwardane, 6th class Rathcormac N.S.
Option 3 – Holly O’ Reilly, 3rd class Mercy Primary
Option 4 – Abigail Higgins, 6th class Scoil Ursula

Summer Camps Conclude

The 2019 Sligo Rovers Summer Camps, sponsored by The Sligo Champion have come to a close after eight hugely successful weeks in The Showgrounds.

The Summer Camps which began on July 1st brought hundreds of children to The Showgrounds, in what was an action packed summer for everyone involved.

This was the first year in which the club brought foreign exchange students to the camp, with over 50 international students attending from countries such as Spain, Italy and France.

The Breakfast Club proved extremely popular once again, selling out for three of the eight weeks with the children eating their breakfast in The Showgrounds while also meeting members of the first team squad before the camp commenced each day.

Camp co-ordinator, Shane Crossan, spoke of his delight at how well the camps went while also paying tribute to the coaches. He added

“2019 has proven to be the biggest year for Summer Camps in the clubs history and that is something I am very proud to say.

“The success of the camps year in year out would not be possible without the hard work of the coaches who have proven very popular amongst the kids yet again.

“I would like to pay tribute to Lorraine Mc Donnell in The Sligo Champion and to all of her staff who sponsored our Summer Camps yet again this year. To have such a strong local brand supporting our camps is an honour and a testament to the camp itself.

“Finally I would like to thank all parents who brought their children to The Showgrounds this Summer as without their support and trust the Sligo Rovers camps would not be the success they are today.

Sligo Rovers Football Club would like to wish all of the children the very best of luck as they return to school and we look forward to welcoming them all back again at our Halloween camp in October. Full details of the Halloween Camp will be released in the coming weeks.

Run, walk or push 1000 km in one year

Sligo Rovers are partnering with Nazareth Nursing Home Sligo and Ballymote Community Nursing Unit in 500 km/1000 km Challenge in aid of both nursing homes.

Together, they challenge you to get out and about and to cover 500km or 1000km in one year all while raising funds for this very worthy cause.

Walk it, jog it, run it or even dance it. The choice is yours. You will need to walk just 1.4km every day to cover the 500km in the year and double it to cover the 1000km. You may already be a keen walker or runner and achieve this over a number of marathons or you may be starting off from the couch to 5km, either way, do it your way.

Take this on as a personal challenge, or better still, get your family, friends and colleagues involved.

Whatever way you take part, the sponsorship you raise is supporting Nazareth Nursing Home Sligo and Ballymote Community Nursing Unit to build and refurbish their Nursing homes, so that people living there have the most comfortable homes where they can live out their lives in style.

Each participant will receive a medal and certificate on completion of the challenge.

Sligo Rovers are delighted to be supporting our neighbours with the campaign, further evidence to the club being at the heart of the community once again.

It’s free to join, all you have to do is go to www.thenazarethcarefund.com/walkingchallenge and fill in your details to register. The 365 days begins the day you register.
