Astro League Season Concludes

The Astro league concluded last week, in what was an excellent campaign of football which commenced last September.

There were a total of 12 teams who took part in the league, which was an increase from 10 the previous year. This made it the biggest Astro League in the region.

Each team had one fixture per week, with the fixtures taking place under floodlights on the Sligo Rovers Astro pitch on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Fridays.

It is fair to say that this years league proved to be one of the most competitive to date, with penalty shoot-outs required to settle the cup competitions and the league titles being decided by the result of the final league fixture. There were four competitions through-out the year being the Premier Division, Championship Division, Open Cup and finally the Emmett O Connor Memorial Cup.

The set up of the league involves each team playing each other once before Christmas, and when the league returns after the break the league is then split up in two, being the Premier  & Championship division. All teams revert back to zero points. This structure has proven very popular amongst the teams as it ensures that each game is ran on a competitive basis and teams have plenty to play for each week.

Sligo Rovers would like to congratulate the following teams who collected silverware through-out the 2016/17 season:

Sally Gardens: Premier Division Champions 2017

The Belfry: Championship Champions 2017

GSS: Open Cup Champions 2017

The Belfry: Emmett O Connor Memorial Cup Champions 2017

Sligo Rovers would like to thank all of the teams who participated in the league this season. Your commitment is very much appreciated and we look forward to welcoming you all back in September for the 2017/18 season. If any new team would be interested in joining the biggest Astro League in the region, please contact Shane Crossan on 071-9171212.
