Gerard Lyttle appointed manager

Sligo Rovers are pleased to announce the appointment of Gerard Lyttle as new manager.

Lyttle comes to The Showgrounds following two years in charge of Danske Bank Premiership club Cliftonville. He has today signed a contract to the end of the 2018 season.

He led the Belfast club to a fourth-place finish and Europa League qualification in his first season as manager in 2015-16 and he departs with them currently fourth as the 2016-17 season approaches its conclusion.

The 39-year-old also brought silverware to Cliftonville in winning the League Cup with a 3-0 win in the 2016 final over Ards.

Rovers chairman Martin Heraghty spoke about the appointment:

“Gerard joins us with a good track record from his time with Cliftonville. He is ambitious and eager to bring success to Sligo Rovers. Gerard shares the vision we have for the club.”

As a player Lyttle played with Celtic, Peterborough United, Northampton Town as well as with Cliftonville while also being capped at Northern Ireland under-21 level.

Following the end of his playing career he joined the coaching staff of Cliftonville in 2011 and was with the club as they won consecutive league title in 2012-13 and 2013-14. After a short caretaker spell he was named manager in October 2015.

Lyttle will take charge of his first Bit o’Red game next Friday when we visit Drogheda United in the SSE Airtricity League.

An unveiling will take place at a press conference at 3pm in the Clayton Hotel tomorrow afternoon.
